Nerves were running high on April 23, 2021, as I walked out to the aircraft for my Private Pilot practical test. Despite the checkride jitters, the flight proved to be a defining moment in building confidence as Pilot in Command.

The Situational Awareness Test

After wrapping up slow flight maneuvers and demonstrating basic instrument control under the hood, the Designated Pilot Examiner (DPE) instructed me to turn to a specific heading.

Scanning the airspace, I immediately noticed another aircraft right along that assigned path. Instead of blindly executing the left turn as directed, I asserted PIC authority and proposed an alternative: a 270-degree right turn to safely rollout on the desired heading while keeping clear of the traffic.

The DPE simply smiled and said, “Don’t worry about the turn, let’s see an emergency descent.”

It wasn’t until the post-flight debrief with my instructor that the lightbulb went off: the DPE had intentionally given me that heading right as I came off the hood to test whether I was keeping outside visual awareness. Passing that test set the tone for the rest of the practical exam, ending with a fresh Private Pilot certificate in hand!
